  • The Finnish Prisoner

Some of you may remember that in 2007 the town of Lewes staged a community opera composed by Orlando Gough with a libretto by Stephen Plaice which was inspired by the story of the Finnish prisoners who were incarcerated in Lewes Naval Prison during the Crimean War. About 28 of the prisoners died of disease and a memorial to them was erected in the graveyard of the Church of St John sub Castro on the order of the Tsar, Alexander II. The monument was repaired in 1957 and has been refurbished again this year and it was rededicated on 28 September in the presence of the Ambassadors of Finland and the Russian Federation.  This makes it a rather fitting time to be reminded of the opera. We are grateful to Orlando Gough and Stephen Plaice and the other copyright owners for allowing us to show the DVD that was made of one of the performances in 2007. Further details of the performance and a synopsis will be provided to those who attend. The DVD will be introduced by John Hancorn, who conducted the performances of the opera in 2007.

The meeting will be at the Finnish Institute, 35-36 Eagle Street, London WC1 at 6.00 for 6.30 pm. The DVD’s last two hours. Please use the contact form to notify if you would like to attend.
